Advent calendars sold at Lidl recalled because of potential salmonella contamination

Patriot-News - 12/7/2022

Advent calendars sold at Lidl have been recalled because the chocolates in them have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella.

Lidl US has recalled the 8.4-ounce Favorina Advent Calendar with Premium Chocolate with a Creamy Filling, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The calendars were sold between Oct. 12 and Dec. 5 and have since been removed from store shelves. The calendars have a best-if-used-by date of 2023 and the barcode number 4056489516965.

Lidl said the potential salmonella contamination was found during its own “routine testing.”

Salmonella is an organism that can cause “serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.”

Symptoms of salmonella infection include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

“In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.”

The Advent calendars can be returned to Lidl for a refund. For more information, call Lidl US at 844-747-5435, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. EST, Monday through Saturday.
