Twitter, eBay asked to crack down on fake vaccine card sales by 45 attorneys general

The New York Daily News - 4/1/2021

Twitter, eBay and Shopify have become hubs for selling fake COVID vaccination cards, and 45 state attorneys general are asking the platforms to take action against the fraudsters.

Official Centers for Disease Control vaccination cards are given to people after they’ve received a COVID-19 vaccine, but scammers have started selling fake cards to unvaccinated people.

“The false and deceptive marketing and sales of fake COVID vaccine cards threaten the health of our communities, slow progress in getting our residents protected from the virus, and are a violation of the laws of many states,” the attorneys general wrote in a letter to Twitter, eBay and Shopify CEOs.

They asked the tech honchos to monitor and remove ads for such fake cards, while preserving evidence of the scams, adding they’d “appreciate a response to this request” by April 9.

Fake vaccine cards have also been spotted on less mainstream websites.

More than 56 million people, nearly 17% of the U.S. population, have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to CDC data.
