Volusia, Flagler schools count 2,368 cases of COVID since September

News-Journal - 3/27/2021

Between March 14-20, the state reported 83 new cases of COVID-19 in Volusia schools and 13 in Flagler schools — making a total of 2,368 cases since Sept. 6.

The report from the Florida Department of Health includes cases reported at private schools.

Flagler County's spring break was the week of March 15, and Volusia's was this week. Now, officials are watching to see whether there will be an increase in cases after the break similar to when students returned in January.

Both districts are collaborating with local health departments to vaccinate teachers, although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says teachers don't need to be vaccinated for schools to reopen safely. Last week the CDC updated its guidelines to say that masked students can sit 3 feet apart in classrooms rather than 6 feet.

This week, the Volusia County school district will discuss whether to make masks optional in schools. Currently, masks are required for all students, staff and visitors. The CDC recommends that even those who have been vaccinated continue to wear masks and social distance in public.

Last week: State: Cases of COVID-19 in Volusia, Flagler schools reach 2,290

The state's numbers include a breakdown of how many cases are in each school — information the districts have been unwilling to provide. Neither agency is providing information about how many students or staff members are in quarantine.
