Authorities investigate Osteen farm with ill people, dead animals

News-Journal - 10/8/2018

Oct. 07--Two people were transported to the hospital Sunday from an Osteen farm where authorities said dead animals were found.

Dispatchers said the man and woman complained of illness and believed it could be related to parasites from dead animals on the farm.

It was not immediately known if the illness of the people was related to the dead animals.

As emergency workers responded to the scene, chatter referred to a HazMat Team and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention being called.

Volusia County Fire Services Division Chief Paul Ebanks said they were called around noon about two ill people at 345 Black Lake Road in Osteen.

Ebanks said the people were transported to the hospital. HazMat workers said they decontaminated the two people at the scene, providing them with protective suits and masks before they were transported to Florida Hospital DeLand.

The woman was transported as an emergency, authorities said.

Around 6 p.m., fire officials were heard saying on the scanner that a door at Florida Hospital DeLand had been shut and would remain closed for approximately 30 minutes because of the patients brought there from the farm.

Dispatchers said the "802" code number for Florida Hospital DeLand "would be good in approximately 30 minutes."

Hospital spokeswoman Patty Stilling denied reports that an area of the hospital was shut down and said that the head nurse on duty had told there was no such incident.

By late Sunday, Ebanks said authorities still had not determined what the situation was at the farm.

No further information was available.
