Learning center offers tips on toxic relationships

St. Joseph News-Press - 3/26/2018

March 26--A local learning center is teaching community members how to deal with unhealthy relationships.

MidCity Excellence Community Learning Center hosted a workshop Sunday afternoon called, "Dealing with Toxic Relationships."

Local counselor Steve Sewell shared tips and strategies for those in an unhealthy relationship to use.

"I think if you were to ask counselors across the board how busy their schedules are, they would say most of them are packed up with people who don't know how to deal with their relationships," Sewell said. "I think this is a really big issue."

Sewell encouraged individuals to identify their own personal values and decide what's important to them.

MidCity Excellence noted that crime is rising in St. Joseph, but believes addressing conflicts will help.

"Living in a conflict-free world is probably not going to happen, but we can learn how to recognize it, how to communicate, and how to fight fair," Warren said.

Sunday's event is apart of Mosaic Community Connect, which helped MidCity Excellence apply for funding to implement a program that addresses mental health.

MidCity Excellence offers one-on-one counseling for free to community members.
