Bureau County Health Department explains Illinois Farmers Market Food Safety Guide

Summer brings an abundance of fruits, vegetables and other farm-fresh foods that are available at farmers markets throughout the state of Illinois.
In order to make sure those foods are safe and healthy for consumers the Illinois Department of Public Health has created the Farmers Market Food Safety Guide, developed to provide standards, guidelines and consistent information to Illinois vendors and market managers.
In addition to ensuring food safety the guide also serves to bolster local food entrepreneurship, offering advice on food items that may be sold, conditions that must be met at the point of sale and helpful tips on food safety. Additionally, it contains information regarding some of the risks involved with foods often sold at farmers markets and guidance on transporting, delivering and displaying them.
