Arlington public-health nurse wins state accolades

Arlington Sun Gazette - 5/24/2017

Josephine Peters, who has spent more than two decades with the Arlington County government's Public Health Division, has been named a regional Public Health Nurse of the Year by the Virginia Department of Health.

"Public-health nurses are often on the front line of care in their community," said Robert Hicks, the Virginia Department of Health's deputy commissioner for community health services, in announcing award recipients.

A native of New Zealand, Peters joined the county government as a public-health nurse in 1995, and has held a host of positions, currently serving as unit chief for planning and education.

Throughout her career, Peters has worked on a number of initiatives, including training public-health nurses to better serve clients at risk of domestic violence and supporting the Partnership for a Healthier Arlington.

The Virginia Department of Health presented its 2017 Public Health Nurse of the Year award to Clare Ruday, who works for the Charlottesville-Albemarle Health Department.
