Waffles served to Unit 40 students recalled

Effingham Daily News - 5/10/2017

May 10--EFFINGHAM -- Although there have been no reports of illness, as a precautionary action the Effingham Unit 40 school district said Tuesday that it received word waffles served last week were a part of a recall.

The district heard on Tuesday from food distributor Kohl Wholesale that Aunt Jemima Jumbo Whole Grain Waffles 18/8 count were a part of a precautionary manufacturer's recall. The waffles were served for breakfast on May 1 at the Early Learning Center, Central Grade School, South Side Grade School and Effingham Junior High.

"It is the district's understanding that no illnesses have been reported," Superintendent Mark Doan said in a release. "The product is being recalled as a precautionary measure giving that the health and safety of consumers is the top priority."

The recall stated that testing of the Aunt Jemima waffles produced by Pinnacle Foods indicated the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in the plant where the products are made. The food manufacturer is working with the Food and Drug Administration and will fully refund customers of the products.

Pinnacle Foods sent out the recall of several products that had the potential to be contaminated, including Aunt Jemima Frozen Pancakes, Frozen Waffles and Frozen French Toast Slices distributed in the U.S. And Mexico.

Although Pinnacle stated in a release that no illnesses have been reported, this was a precautionary measure. Symptoms for an otherwise healthy person would be short-term and could include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that could cause serious -- even fatal infections -- in some young children, frail or elderly people and those with a weakened immune system.

Pinnacle stated in a press release that no other Mrs. Butterworth's or Aunt Jemima products or any other products produced by Pinnacle Foods are affected by the recall.
